What is an Accumulator?

Football Accumulators - How do they work?

Accumulator bets are the quickest way to win big money on football matches for small stakes – they can be very difficult to get right but hugely rewarding when you do.

If you choose a series of selections at lucrative odds, it can be the nearest thing to buying a lotto ticket. Everything has to fall in your favour but if it does, it could make you very rich!

And, of course, betting on football is not a random process like numbered balls dropping out of a machine. You can use your knowledge and judgement to try and get an edge on the bookmaker.

So what is a football accumulator?

Essentially, an accumulator – or ‘acca’ as most people refer to them – is a bet where two or more selections are combined and the odds multiplied to calculate the eventual payout.

There is no limit to the number of selections but you will need to get them all correct for your bet to be a winner – unless there is a consolation offered by the bookmaker, which is commonly known as Acca Insurance.

For instance, if you backed Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona all to win, and they were all at individual odds of 2/1, and you slapped a £10 accumulator on then you would be looking at returns of over £800!

Can I include selections in different markets?

Yes. There are often as many as 200 different markets available on a football match so you don’t have to limit yourself to who will win for an accumulator, you can mix and match, but you will generally be able to pick only one selection in each game.

Can I include selections in different competitions and/or on different days?

Yes. As long as odds are available there are few restrictions as long as one outcome does not influence another within the bet. But there may be limitations in terms of any bonuses offered by the bookmakers, e.g. Acca Insurance may only apply to bets placed on matches on the same day.

Which bookmaker should I visit to place my accumulator bets?

You can use any, in theory, but we love a bookie who offers either bonus winnings or compensation for a near-miss – good examples are bet365, BetVictor, Paddy Power and William Hill.
